A Letter to Abdul, by Usman Qadir

Dubai, November 08, 2022 (PPI-OT):Following the ICC Hall of Fame announcement on 8 November 2022, open letters have been written to the inductees by those close to them, with their reactions to the news. Here, Usman Qadir writes to his father, Abdul.

To Babajan,

I am so proud that you are being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. It is a huge honour and an incredible achievement, and my only regret is that you are not still with us to accept this award. I know how much it meant to you to play for Pakistan, and I know how much you meant to every cricket fan in our country.

I speak for the family, for Rehman, Imran and Suleman, Noor Fatima and Noor Amna, and of course our mother who cherished you. It is a great honour for the family to hear that you are being celebrated in this way, and we are so proud of everything you achieved on the cricket pitch.

But for us, the pride stretches far beyond your cricketing exploits. We are grateful for the way you raised us, the way you taught us to speak, to be humble and to be nice to everyone around us.

It was such a shock when you passed away. The moment you left us we began to truly understand everything you had taught us about life. You were a great father, a great husband, and a great friend. You always encouraged us in everything we did, and I still remember and admire your unwavering positivity.

The times we went out for dinner together it was clear to see the legacy you left among cricket fans and people in general in Pakistan. The way you were with people was the best lesson I received in how to be humble, and how to always be there for people when they needed it.

To cricket fans everywhere, you were the person who kept leg-spin bowling alive in the 1970s and 1980s, and while I was too young to watch you play in your prime, your influence has always been there.

You taught me a lot about cricket. I’m still very emotional that you are not here with us anymore. After all, you are the reason that I played internationally for Pakistan. When Justin Langer came to me and asked me to fly to Brisbane to bowl in the nets in front of him, it looked as though my international future might lie with Australia. But you told me how much you wanted me to play for Pakistan, how much it would mean for you to see me with the star on my jersey.

I did get selected in October 2019, the same day we welcomed my daughter into the world. Sadly you passed away a month earlier, but I know how proud you would have been to see me play for Pakistan.

And yet, there were times when you were not happy with me. One of the stories I will always remember will be that when I was 15 I wanted to go to Pakistan trials and you insisted I was not ready, since I had only played cricket with a tennis ball with you up to that point.

I snuck out and went anyway against your advice. When I came home, you knew where I had been and spent half an hour shouting at me to tell me I wasn’t ready. As soon as you let me tell you that I had been picked – and confirmed it with the selectors – you sat me down and started planning what fields I should set for right and left-handed batters.

I think it was a couple of years earlier that I really understood how great a player you had been, even as someone who had been too young to watch you play international cricket. You played in a veteran’s match against India and signalled to me up by the sightscreen that you were going to take a wicket with your third ball.

I recall the batter left the first leg-break, and the second, before you unleashed the wrong ‘UN and had him caught at silly mid-on. Watching on from the stands that was the day I realised God had given you a gift.

You truly were one of a kind. We share a surname but there is no one like you. I have tried to follow in your footsteps but I can never be you, you are a legend of this sport and in Pakistan.

I am so very honoured that the ICC has recognised everything you achieved.

Usman

A Letter to Charlotte Edwards, by Clare Connor

Dubai, November 08, 2022 (PPI-OT):Following the ICC Hall of Fame announcement on 8 November 2022, open letters have been written to the inductees by those close to them, with their reactions to the news. Here, Clare Connor writes to Charlotte Edwards.

Dear Lottie,

How amazing. I am so proud of you, and everything you have achieved in one of the most remarkable cricket careers.

A quick glance at the other incredible names inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame makes it apparent quite what an honour this is – and you are completely deserving of it.

I can’t believe it can be true, but I think we met just over 30 years ago. Two young girls at Junior England trials, warming up in the nets with our Dads throwing balls at us. Cricket wasn’t the obvious choice for girls of our age, it wasn’t the easy choice, but we were both in love with the game.

Like everyone who watched you play, I knew straightaway that you were special, a different class. I knew again in 2006 when I retired and passed the England captaincy to you that you would take our team, and our sport, to bigger and better things. And you did. Of course you did. As a player you lifted trophies, you scored runs, you set standards, you inspired hundreds of thousands – at times, you dragged us kicking and screaming over the line and into the professional era.

As a captain and as a batter your name was similarly totemic to that of Rachael Heyhoe-Flint. At that stage in the game’s evolution, people may not have known women’s cricket, but they knew Charlotte Edwards.

And I know, by the way, that you’re far from done yet. There are more challenges ahead of you and I have every confidence you’ll meet them with your characterful drive and determination. But for the time being let’s celebrate you, Charlotte Edwards the run-scorer and the captain who belted out karaoke amongst the girls with as much pride as you sang the national anthem ahead of a huge game. They were your team, and you achieved so much with them.

You did it all with the bat. That 92 off not many to regain the Ashes in Hobart jumps to mind, and still nobody has scored more runs for England Women than you. And you did it all as a captain. 2009, of course, was a real highlight – two World Cups and an Ashes! I know what it meant to you to lift the ICC Women’s World Cup at Sydney after so many years of being put in our place by the Aussies!

All of those landmarks and records make you a true great of the game on the pitch. But just as importantly, off the pitch, as a friend and as a human being, you are also a true great. You have always been so kind, supportive and generous. Cricket has been, and still is, really lucky to have you.

I and many others are so proud of you for being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. From Ramsey Cricket Club to the Vipers and the Sixers, via the most remarkable feats for your country over so many years. Well done Lottie, I’m unbelievably proud of you.

CM Chaudhry Parvez Elahi holds meeting to review security arrangements of long march

Lahore, November 08, 2022 (PPI-OT):A meeting was held under the chair of Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Parvez Elahi at his office on Tuesday which was attended by Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Asad Umar, Moonis Elahi, Umar Ayub and Hussain Elahi. It took a detailed review of the security arrangements for the long march that would start on Thursday. The police officials presented the proposed plan regarding the security of the long march.

The CM instructed to ensure fool-proof security arrangements and said that the participants should be provided with full security in every city from Wazirabad to Rawalpindi. Snipers should be deputed on the rooftops of buildings along the route, he said.

A strong force of 15 thousand police personnel will be deployed on the long march route from Wazirabad to Rawalpindi; he noted and ordered that the police control room should actively perform its duties 24 hours.

The long march should be monitored with drone cameras and a two-tier security fence should be arranged around the long march.

The CM asserted that there will be no compromise on the foolproof security of the PTI leadership and the participants, and the use of bulletproof rostrum and bulletproof glass should be ensured on the container, and a new bulletproof container should be prepared. In this regard, the Punjab government will provide all possible support, he said.

He emphasised that foolproof security arrangements should be made in every aspect and police and administrative officers should be deputed for coordination in each district and additional police force should be called from other districts in Rawalpindi. The CM ordered that other accomplices of the accused, who threatened to kill Imran Khan in Hafizabad, should also be brought to justice.

The police force is my team and I value their sacrifices, he concluded. Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that he sees the sacrifices of the police with admiration and clarified that he did not criticize the police department but expressed concerns about an individual in his speech. Imran Khan thanked the police twice for the excellent security arrangements in Gujranwala, he added.

Like the police, there are talented officers in every department and average officers too. There was a murderous attack on Imran Khan, and the delay in the registration of FIR caused public concern and questions were raised, he maintained. My speech was misrepresented.

He said that the lodged FIR has been rejected by everyone. Some elements are afraid of our long march, they don’t want it to be a march, he added. Asad Umar said that the police provided the best security during the long march. We would proceed with the best coordination during the long march starting from Thursday, he added.

Mian Mehmood-ur-Rashid, Umar Sarfaraz Cheema, Chief Secretary Abdullah Sumbal, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Cap. (r) Asadullah Khan, Addl IG (SB), Addl IG (Operations) Punjab, CCPO Lahore, Addl IG CTD, DG rescue 1122, Commissioner Gujrat Division, DIG (Operations) Punjab, RPO Gujrat, DCs and DPOs of Gujrat, Sialkot, Wazirabad, Hafizabad attended the meeting while Commissioner Rawalpindi Division, RPO Rawalpindi, CPO, Rawalpindi and Jhelum’s DCs and DPOs participated through video link.
