Pakistan aim to win second successive ICC Women’s Championship series at home

Lahore, November 02, 2022 (PPI-OT):Bismah Maroof-led Pakistan are hoping to carry forward the winning momentum gained in the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup as they take on Ireland in the first of the three ICC Women’s Championship ODIs at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on Friday.

Ireland, on their maiden tour to Pakistan, will play three T20Is from 12 to 16 November at the same venue following the conclusion of the ODI series.

These ODIs will be Ireland and Pakistan’s second series in the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25. While Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka 2-1 in Karachi in June, Ireland lost all three matches to South Africa in Dublin in June.

The hosts enter the series on the back of a productive five-day pre-series camp, which included two intra-squad matches and intense training and practice sessions. Pakistan – who are number eight in the ICC Women’s ODI rankings are ready to make an impression in the 50-over format in familiar playing conditions. Meanwhile, Ireland occupy the ninth spot in the ODI rankings.

Pakistan enjoy an historic edge over the tourists in ODIs, having won 12 out of the 18 matches played between the two sides to date. The last time the two sides competed in One-Day Internationals was in February 2017 with Pakistan winning the match by 86 runs courtesy two wickets for 25 in 10 overs from left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu.

Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof while talking to PCB Digital, said: “After a good performance in the recently concluded ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup, we are now focused on delivering our best in the ODI series which is a part of the ICC Women’s Championship.

“Our aim like other teams would be to get points from the series. We have good blend of experience and youth in our side and it is really good to see young players performing and helping the side to win.

“We are here to play a good game of cricket and we want fans to come to the stadium and support the team.”

Ireland captain Laura Delany said: “We are delighted to be here in Pakistan, it’s a pretty historical moment for an Irish cricket team to travel to Pakistan for the first time and we will relish the opportunity.

“The ODI series will be a competitive one as ICC Women’s Championship points will be up for grabs. We would like to go out there and put a really strong performance in the first game.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity for the young girls to come to the stadium and get behind the Pakistan women’s team who have been incredibly successful for the last few years.”

Study tour of forestry BS-VII students to various forest types in KPK

Gilgit, November 02, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Forestry, Range and Wildlife Management, Karakoram International University placed a significant emphasis on graduating students for practical learning and exposure to the forestry field and organized a study tour for the BS-VII students to various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir for the study of the forest types of Pakistan and their management from October 21-29, 2022.

Beginning in Gilgit-Baltistan, a region blessed with some of the most significant bounties of nature, students observed variety in floral diversity down to Chilas. The breath-taking valleys, plains, peaks, and heritage sites in this dry temperate region attract visitors worldwide. Chilas, located on the Indus River, is now grappling with the consequences of large swathes of denuded forest, a decline in the bird population, and shrinking vegetation cover due to anthropogenic activities.

The vegetation of the area falls in the dry temperate coniferous forest containing the natural forests, which mainly consisted of Cedrus deodara (Diar / Deodar), Pinus wallichiana (Kail), Abies pindrow (Fir), and Pinus gerardiana (Chilgoza), Picea smithiana (Spruce), Juniper (Juniperus spp) pure or mixed, etc.

In some places, forests have been subjected to overuse due to illegal cuttings and free grazing. The change in land use, particularly for forest land use in the Diamer district of GB, is associated with social, environmental, and economic factors.

The natural forests in Northern Areas are critical watersheds of valleys below, and this water is the mainstay for agriculture and hydropower for the floodplains in Pakistan. Many species of wild animals and plants depend on these forests. Some of the species and habitats have national and global significance.

Like any other long-living trees, their role as carbon sink needs no emphasis. Forests are God-gifted open laboratories of nature for education and research. On October 22, 2022, the students visited the Principal office, Punjab Forest School (PFS), Ghora Gali, Murree, where Mr. Babar Sohail, the Principal, welcomed the students and briefed them about the academic and development activities of PFS and its prospects.

He also took students around and identified flora and fauna of the premises. He highlighted the establishment of the Forest Service Academy at Ghora Gully, Murree, and its scheduled role in meeting the professional demand of forest officers/officials in the homeland. He also elaborated upon IUCN categories of protected areas and PAs in Pakistan province-wise. Dr. Umm-e- Habiba, Assistant Director, accompanied the students to a field visit of Trail No. 5 where the flora and fauna of MHNP were identified. All the visiting students performed an exercise to eliminate the invasive species Lantana Camara (commonly called lantana).

On October 26, 2022, the students visited the office of the National Project Director, Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Programme (TBTTP) in Islamabad, where, on behalf of National Project Director/Inspector General Forests, Amjad Ali, the Program Officer briefed them about different phases of this program of national importance and its achievement in different phases. In the afternoon, the students visited the Timber Sale Depot of the Timber Extraction Division at Sehala, Rawalpindi.

He elaborated on all the processes in detail about auction and Lotwara preparation. An exercise of volume calculation of different scants and logs was carried out under his supervision in the field. The Chief Conservator of Forests gave a detailed briefing about the forests of AJK and addressed the students in the first session.

He also answered the questions of visiting students about the forestry scenario in AJK. The group was then taken to the local Wood Industrial Unit under the supervision of Sardar Akram, DFO, where the timber was converted for furniture and construction purposes. Yadav’s 51 not out off 25 balls against the Netherlands in Sydney and a valiant 68 off 40 against South Africa in Perth have helped him overtake New Zealand’s Devon Conway and Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, who had held the top spot since 4 September this year.

Yadav is the 23rd player to top the T20I batting rankings and only the second Indian to reach No. 1 in T20 cricket after Virat Kohli, who spent 1,013 days at the top in different periods from September 2014 to December 2017. The latest weekly update, that considers performances in matches completed by Tuesday, sees Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga advance four places to second position among bowlers.

Hasaranga, who had become No.1 during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup last year, has moved back towards the top position after taking one wicket against New Zealand and three against Afghanistan. Hasaranga has only three points less than Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan.

England seamer Sam Curran, who grabbed two wickets each against New Zealand and Ireland during this period, is up two places to sixth position while South Africa quick Anrich Nortje has progressed 11 slots to eighth position after his haul of four for 10 against Bangladesh.

New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner has moved into the top 10 while his team-mates Trent Boult and Tim Southee have taken the 12th and 16th positions, respectively.

South Africa fast bowler Lungi Ngidi’s Player of the Match effort of four for 29 against India has lifted him 11 places to joint-28th with India’s Axar Patel.

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (up three places to18th), Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Wasim (up one place to 21st), New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi (up three places to 22nd) and left-arm seam bowlers Fazalhaq Farooqi of Afghanistan (up four places to joint-24th) and India’s Arshdeep Singh (up 16 places to 27th) are the prominent gainers in the bowlers’ list.
