Mirpurkhas Voter Registration Lags Behind National Average

Mirpurkhas: Voter registration in Mirpurkhas stands at 52% of its projected 2025 population, trailing the national average by two percentage points, according to recently published statistics. The data, drawn from district-wise electoral roll statistics by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), highlights a significant gap in voter registration when compared to the national figure of 54%.

According to the Free and Fair Election Network, the methodology for these statistics involves cross-referencing population estimates from the 2023 Digital Census with the electoral roll. The 2025 population estimate of 1,745,200, derived from a 1.88% inter-censal annual growth rate applied to Mirpurkhas's base population of 1,681,386, serves as the basis for calculating registration rates. The district currently has 907,743 registered voters, comprising 482,168 males and 425,575 females.

Mirpurkhas ranks 59th out of 136 districts nationally by population size and is represented by two Members of the National Assembly. In terms of voter registration rate, it ranks 68th nationally and 9th within Sindh's 30 districts. The discrepancy in registration rates is attributed to census patterns typical of rural Sindh, where in-migrants are often recorded in Mirpurkhas during the census but remain registered as voters in their original localities. This results in an inflated census-based population without a corresponding increase in local voter registration.

Female voters make up 46.9% of the registered electorate, presenting a gender gap of 6.2%. Efforts to enhance voter registration, particularly among women, remain a priority as Mirpurkhas prepares for upcoming general elections.
